Research Interests

My research interests are in the area of solid mechanics. Much of my work relates to expertise in the areas of fracture mechanics and the mechanics of layered materials.

One area currently being investigated relates to mechanics issues in solid freeform fabrication processes, which are automated processes for building three-dimensional parts from CAD models. My work consists of experiments and analyses related to residual stress build-up, inter-layer debonding and warping in manufactured parts. My research on stress build-up and warping has some parallels with research in the literature on welding processes. The work on inter-layer debonding has wide applications to the problem of designing debond-resistant multi-layered components. This research is being performed with other CMU faculty in the areas of heat transfer and robotics.
